Hi all! Sorry I haven't been posting in the last few days... I sure have been
=reading= tho! <smile> Congrats to all of you who met your first goal (and
beyond!) And then there are =us= .... <weak smile>
I am walking to get the newpaper each day (Thanks Sharon for your congrats e-
mail too)<g>. I don't really think of it as exercise (since I'm doing
something I =need= to do; get the newspaper) and walking back. It =did= make
a difference tho (and it's only 4 houses away). I lost 3 lbs in a 7-day week
by doing that alone (no change in my new eating habits).
So what does that mean? <duh> Exercise has =got= to be a part of =my=
lifestyle, diet or no-diet. I really haven't lost any substantial weight but
I have conciously changed a LOT of my eating habits. I =really= read labels
when I shop now, and I try to have =only= those foods in the house that are
the lowest in fats/cholesteral. Even snack foods are bought with the
"content" in mind.
I may be taking the slow route to losing weight, but on a 'personal' note, I
am finding that I never really =looked= at what I was eating (quantity or
quality) before, and since this is approach I've decided to take with my
"lifetime" diet, I am learning a lot about what I =used= to eat, that got me
where I am now.
Well, anyway, it's been one month and 1+ week, and I am still at my starting
weight of 1/1/92. Since I have gone up, then back down, I think my body is
just beginning to use these new foods it's getting, in the proper way. ...and
the =positive= side of it is: I'm beginning to =enjoy= the tastes of foods
that were not all that 'attractive' to me before.
Thanks to all of you who post so many good and interesting and positive posts
each day. It's always a joy to come over here and 'grab' this topic and read!
BTW, I like the Leanie Genies too, if we're still looking.
Bye all Connie

For everyone wondering about fast food restaurant nutritional details: Most
of these places have nice brochures that are yours for the price of a stamp or
a phone call. Some will even send you coupons good at their restaurants if you
write a nice enough letter! (I know, the temptation may just be too great to
use that coupon for the big Wendy's double bacon Classic. But it makes a nice
gift.) Here are few addresses:

Go on. Call or write. It reminds them that there is consumer pressure for
"better" fast foods, with more alternatives, less fat, calories and salt.
I also have addresses for branded consumer packaged goods (Pillsbury, Kraft,
Stouffer, etc) who also put out detailed and interesting brochures. If
anybody's interested, just say so, and I'll post some of them too. -- John

Just a quick note. Weight Watchers lets you substitute half your water with
DECAF diet sodas, teas and coffees. If it has caffeine, it DOES NOT count
toward water intake.

Yay Marilyn! You're doing great! Don't look too far ahead. It's such a
common pitfall. My mom just quit WW yesterday becasue she was "losing too
slowly". I was really upset with her. My dad is doing great, but she felt
that 8lbs in 8 weeks was not good enough for her. I told her she can't expect
to lose as fast as my dad does, he's a man (More muscle tissue that burns
faster than women's more fatty tissue), she's 67 years old and she does no
sustained aerobic excercise. Sigh. But she said WW goal weight for her was
too thin, and she can't eat all that food, so she'll try on her own. She
_has_ lost weight on her own before, but I felt she was being unrealistic. Oh
well. She's got to do what she's comfortable with.
Try to focus on making other things in life better, and the program will just
fade into the background and become habit, not such a primary focus. (This
advice is as much for myself as for anyone else!)

Connie,
A woman friend called today to tell me to purchase the current issue of the
Weider's SHAPE magazine. Among other things, an article on the critical
importance of exercise, in ANY amount. I have heard before that when you do
essentially NO exercise, that is SO far from what your body is "designed" for
that it essentially sets you up for "Let's store up some fat before the big
hike next week"--almost a "store up the fat for the winter" kind of
thing....Anyway, enjoy the walk, and you --will-- get results!
Marilyn,
Congratulations! Look at it this way--you are more than half-way to your
goal (because you spent the first half getting to your --fattest-- point!)
This is a "there and back again" journey--you're on the downhill run! It may
take a while in time, but you are at a good speed now....
RedFex: it is my understanding that much "fast food" contains too much sodium
to be "legal" regardless of what the purveyors claim the fat/bread/meat
exchanges to be--at least one a more than 2 or 3 times a week basis. I agree
with you that we must keep reminding restauranteurs that better food would be
MUCH appreciated (and purchased). Thank you for such a comprehensive address
listing!
(oops--Fez, RedFez, of course....)
Sue--I am sorry that your mother feels that way; a pound a week is EXCELLENT
progress. I am not generally in favor of "double standards" or gender
segregation, but I do think that it often backfires when couples try to adjust
weight at the same time--men and women simply do lose in vastly different
ways. Too discouraging--like trying to base evidence of heart health
improvement in the general population on the basis of counted heart attacks.
But I hope she does find success wherever, and that of course your father
continues with his.
My own thought is that some of us are sprinters; some are marathoners. This is
partly temperment, partly genetics. It is probably as important to realize
which race we are running as it is to measure ourselves against someone
else's "gold-medal pace."
ciao--J

June, that's GREAT news...esepcially if you didn't to "suffer"
too much. That "hidden" weight loss is a wonderful feeling. Keep it up! (But
DO try and get some healthy snacks in the house or office to munch on.
Sometimes the hunger can get so overwhelming you slip and eat WAY bad, if you
don't have fruit or veggies handy.)
Congrats, Mary! Seven pounds off is seven pounds GONE, no matter how
long it takes.
Marilyn, your progress is amazing...I hope you are rewarding yourself
with something (NOT food).
RedFez, thanks for the addresses. I think lots of us could use up-to-
date information, since we frequently have to eat "fast."
Connie, hang in there. If you're making all the changes, especially
the exercise, I KNOW it will work. I'm about at the same place, too, but I
know I'm doing better.

RedFez,
Great List! Thanks! I would like the other listings if you have them.
You know, with a computer handy, and a 'standard' letter format, it would
be very easy to send out a letter to each of those addresses, and have
the info handy..since, like Sonsie said, just =try= driving by an Arby's
after skipping breakfast, on your way to another client meeting, and
having your stomach begin to growl.......oooooooooh, temptation! temptation!
Plus, I for one, don't want to give up being able to 'grab a bite to eat'
with friends, etc. at the fast food places. I know I won't =stick= to
that kind of =promise= to myself over the long-haul. So I would like to
know which of the foods is a better choice.... a =liveable= choice. That's
my goal, too.
Congrats Marilyn ..good show! <smile>

Hello - remember me? I'm back!
Seems like a lot of my old pals are no longeractive on this topic, but I'm
hoping that with the start of another new year, folks will be inspired to
healthful eating and excercise for their resolutions. I know I am!
Joni-what's the deal for reporting stats now?
I'm at 222 lbs, and I'd like to get down possibly to 160. My first big goal
is to get under 200, which I haven't done in over 10 years.
A lot of things have recently changed in my life, and I feel this is an ideal
time for me to lose. I got married in September, and I've just joined my
husband in Virginia after resigning my job in NY. I arrived here on
Wednesday night, and I've been eating very well since then - made my own
spaghetti sauce ad split pea soup from scratch, and have been eatin fruit and
low salt pretzels for snacks. We took a moderate walk together yesterday, and
we need to find out where the local Bally's health club is. I've been a member
of Jack La Lanne since 1987, but haven't worked out on a regular basis since
the beginning of 1992. John, my husband, is going to join my gym, and we'll
be working out together.
Happy holidays to everybody, and I hope to hear from you all soon!

how many pounds lost (or gained) this week.

Hi Joni and Lloyd -
I'll start sending my stats this weekend. Thanks, but I don't need the
reminder, Lloyd.
Joni, what is your stair-climber like? I have one I bought from Sears, but
I never used it much, and it needs repair, and it's back at my parents' house
in NY while I'm in D.C. now. But my husband John and I will be going to
Bally's as soon as he gets his membership and we find the nearest club.
I like the Stairmaster 4000 but most Bally's I've been to have Lifestep,
which I don't like (my knees are not in great shape, and Lifestep is not as
easy to adjust to my comfortable step height as the Stairmaster).
I'm also getting over a cold, and as soon as I feel better, I'll be able to
get my excercise program in gear again. Have a fun New Year's, all.
- Sue :)

I bet I can guess some New Year's resolutions ;) . Yeah, mine, too.
Last year, I dropped about 10 pounds in the beginning of the year (and the
beginning of this program) in 6 weeks. This year, I want to make up the
pounds I gained back recently due to sundry circumstances, and get rid of
another ten....all by my 40th birthday in mid-March. I want to pick up my
exercise program again.
And I resolve to continue confessing my sins and successes each week to
Joni by 12 noon on Sunday.
Please e-mail your stats to "NASS" this week.
Good luck.

We commiserate, lend support, confess sins, discuss techniques, and otherwise
egg each other on to keep losing weight. You admit as much or as little as
you want. I'm fairly up-front about all this (in fact, that's where most of
the excess weight is): I'm in the low 180s, have been as low as 179, and
want to get to 170...and, even more important, redistribute the weight.
Speaking of confession, I just gave in and bought two pairs of jeans in the
next size larger.
> (What's the email for?)
Each week, a bunch of us tell how many pounds we lost (or <sigh> gained), how
many we WANT to lose, and by when. Then Joni puts them in a table,
congratulates the LOSERS and consoles the others.
I've found that, just by keeping track each week of how much I weigh on
Sunday morning, it's made me a lot more conscious of what I'm doing and not
doing. I do keep filed away each week's weight, so I can compare.

Good luck to all of you (us) in 1993. I kinda wasted December as far as the
diet goes. But I'm starting over today and will now get serious about it.
Since Bush is leaving and we won't be a kinder gentler America, maybe we can
be a thinner, healthier America. Brad: I don't have access to any stairs
except at Sunday School. (and I hate those stairs grrrr) And like others, I
have a hard time on stairs because I tore a couple of ligaments in my right
knee and it doesn't work so good anymore. I more or less hop downstairs, and
when it's cold, my knee locks up going up the stairs. I do a little better on
a stairstep (?) the kind that works like a bellows, not the kind that looks
like an escalator. I do use my non-electronic treadmill and exercycle though.
It took me about a year and a half after the accident to be able to use the
exercycle cause my knee wouldn't bend far enough.
Happy New Year!

with New Year's Eve chazerai (munchies), it says I've lost about 3 pounds to
my lowest level in two months.
Better yet, I ought just get a whole, new, non-electronic scale. Consumer

My goal is to lose 11 more pounds by my 40th birthday in 2.5 months.
And to fit into all those 36-inch waist pants again. (while needing a belt

Welcome to a new year and a fresh start!
Congratulations to Florence, Lloyd, and Sue for their losses and to
Mary for maintaining. Joni, hopefully you and I will be losers next week!
I've been using the treadmill. After the first two days, I woke up so
stiff, that I could barely walk! And I only walk on it for a few minutes as I
just don't have the stamina to do much exercise right now. I have to build up
from very light exercise for awhile. Anyway, since my bones, muscles, etc.
ached, I figure it was doing me some good.
Good luck this week, gang.

Joni, et al:
Last week while out shopping with my Mom, I spotted the Dancing
Grannies exercise video. These women are between the ages of about 50 and 70,
are very trim and energetic. The workout starts very slowly with stretching
and progresses to easy-to-learn and -do aerobics.
Since my Mom and I are both so out of shape, and since at her age, she
could do most of the stuff that is included in the usual aerobics video, I
thought this would be a good way for us to exercise together.
Today we ran through about the first 15-20 minutes. She dropped out
after the warmups, and I got a little start on the aerobics before getting too
tired. This is the most time that we've been able to exercise together. I
usually make suggestions on what kind of exercise we can do; she says "uh huh"
but doesn't join in; then neither of us exercises!
She wanted to stop the tape and pick up from where we left off next
time! I told her that it would be best to start with the stretching/warmups
every time. Of course as soon as the Grannies started doing the dance type
movements, my Mom said it was too much like dancing and she couldn't do it.
Grrrr. They explain it so well, and it's so easy that she _could_ learn it
after trying a couple of times.
I hope my Mom benefits from the tape. But even if she decides not to,
I am going to!

Hi everyone!
I spent the first few days of the New Year at a Science Fiction convention
nearby. We walked there (about 45 minutes), and I ate pretty well, lots of
salads, baked potato with nothing but Ruby Tuesday alternative seasoning,
pasta with ketchup, but I ate a few potato chips and some other "junk" as
well.
My weight went back up those four pounds I lost when I weiged myself the
morning after the con, but I didnt let it get me down. And as it happens, my
husband introduced me to the computer game "Lemmings" three days ago, and Ive
spent so much time in front of the computer since then, that as of this
morning, the four pounds are back off! (I'm not one to sit in front of the
computer and eat, I only ate during breaks from playing).
I'd rather be productive, and be excercising, but after I solve the rest of
the levels I'll become a useful member of society again (g). Have any of you
played this game? I thought Tetris was addicting! This game is seriously
obsessive-making.
Anyway, the real point is, that if you have a day or a weekend where you
know you didnt eat the way you really wwould rather be eating, don't let it
stop you from your long-term goal. Instead of beating yourself up, feeling
badly, and eating more, just do omething to keep yourself extra busy and
active, and fill up on good food. You can eat a lot of carbohydrates like
potatoes or pasta if you're feeling hungry, just be creative with seasoning.
Use lemon juice and mustard on baked potato, use a teaspoon of oil and lots of
spices on spaghetti. It takes some planning on what to have (and not to have)
in the house. YOU CAN DO IT!

Joni, what kind of work do you do at home? I'm currently not working yet, I
only just joined my new husband in the DC area, and I have lots of house stuff
to do (unpack, organize), then I'll look for some work. I have a NY license

Slimmin' Sue .....
....... WARNING ........ long post!
I love your handle... great! Does make you think of paring down those pounds.
Sue, in response to your question "what do I do".....
I have run an office support service business for 18 years providing full
office support services, temp personnel (now am a local rep for Manpower) and
Desktop Publishing business. Recently, (8/1/92) I decided it was time for me
to think about turning it over to my son the printer -- so he is buying my
assets (assets only). He is providing the same type of services that I did.
PLUS... we've recently (within the last 3 weeks) invested in new technology --
a new 486/66 running Quark Express, PageMaker and Ventura (all for windows) as
well as an Imagesetter (Agfa) at 600, 1200, 1600 or 2400 dpi and of course a
processor that outputs to paper (Kodak) or film. Guess R.J.'s decided to use
1600 dpi for most everything, unless he has some great photos. The output is
PostScript. If you remember my post the other day... I couldn't figure out
why I couldn't print a postscript file to the HP III. It took us 2 days to
resolve that one -- so simple a fix when we finally did it. <Not laughing
about it> but.... it would have been a major problem, 'cause the imagesetter
is postscript output.
Now comes the fun... time to learn the software, however I just jumped into
Ventura 4.0 (windows) and found it wasn't too bad (have run VP DOS/GEM version
for over 5 years. We are running through the tutorials that come with Quark
and will have a day long training session within a week. PageMaker may get
set on the back burner temporarily 'til I can jump into VP and start learning
Quark. We've found that there is business out there.... several designers and
ad agencies, as well as some of the other businesses we work with are waiting
for their on-on-one demo that we've promised them.
This really is a new venture for R.J. -- but he seems to be picking up on it
fairly quickly -- seems to understand what he is doing. hehehe, I noticed him
looking over my shoulder while I was working with a resume in VP for windows
yesterday.
Whew... guess I got a bit wordy... sorry about that. My feet hurt from
serving dinner and pouring coffee to about 90 people at church. We staged a
show (last night and tonight) -- so it feels good to sit down for a few
minutes and write! The show is an old anglican tradition... called the
Boarshead Feast (I understand the tradition is about 400 years old). It
really is the story of the birth of Christ in song and dance. It was done in
"the round". Dinner was yummy and fattening (I snitched -- hehe, if Sharon
reads this she can holler at me <G> ). 90% of the music we sang was a capella
(four part harmony) really sounded great!
Guess that's it for now!
I had best put my running shoes on before the topic cop catches up with
me.....

you are retiring (I didn't quite understand the "assets only". I planned to

....hehe....
If I keep this up, will no doubt shed a few pounds, but need to add the
exercise too.
I had a meeting at 9:30 this morning. When I went to work I took 1/2 of a
banana and 1 container of non-fat yogurt with me -- that was my lunch. I
worked 'til 11:00 PM tonight... that's when I wised I were still home-based.
Hopefully soon I can upgrade this system so it will handle my present needs.
Well... dinner consisted of 1/2 piece of filet mignon, and a small dish of
mixed veggies I cooked in the microwave with a bit of water. That's the first
and ONLY time I've ever eaten veggies without any butter and salt & pepper.
You know they didn't tast half bad. Now if I can continue to do this it would
be great. I almost had a hot chocolate made with water, but instead opted for
a cup of orange and spice tea.
So... my calorie consumption was much better today... hopefully I can continue
*intelligent* eating and forget about the sweets. Knowing me I'd have to have
1 time/week to gorge on ice cream and chocolate.
BTW.............. since I was so late getting home tonight, I'll post the
losses/gains tomorrow night. OK?!

finished all of my home-made tomato sauce.
Joni-sounds like you're doing fine. If I may recommend, on your steamed
veggies next time you could also try a bit of lemon juice or low-salt soy
sauce with garlic powder and Italian spices. I like plain veggies too, but
it's nice to feel you can have SOMETHING on them, especially if you're used to
butter or margarine. It helps prevent boredom or feeling deprived.
I've been making wonderful spaghetti sauce myself with no oil, and it's
wonderful. If anyone's interested I could post the recipe.

I also noticed some people discussing low-cal frozen dinners. When I was
being really sucessful at losing weight a few years back, I had access to a
microwave oven at work and at school, and since I'm a vegetarian, I sought out
and found some really nice low-cal frozen dinners at Health Food stores. The
ones I like the best are Legume and Jacklyn's brands. They are low in fat,
I'm not sure about the sodium content though, so if salt is an issue you'd
need to check on it.

OK, here goes my recipe for Slimmin' Sue's Spaghetti Sauce:
(This makes enough for about 3 or 4 servings, I'll probably be making up a
larger batch in my humongous cast-iron pot tomorrow)
Ingredients:
4 16oz cans of no-salt added whole California tomatoes
2 medium onions
4 cloves of garlic (or more or less to your own taste)
2 stalks celery
1 red bell pepper
1/2 green bell pepper
1 small container white mushrooms
1 Bay leaf
1/2 - 1 1/2 tsp each black pepper, oregano, basil, rosemary
marjoram, thyme, savory, sage (salt is optional, I don't)
2 Tbsp balsamic or other vinegar
Put about 1/2 inch of water into a large pot (I've been using a 2 qt but I'd
reccomend a 3-4 qt). Chop up the onion and garlic and start to saute them
together in the water. Chop up the other veggies, and gradually add them to
the pot (I put in the celery first, then the peppers, and finally the
mushrooms. Saute them together adding water as it boild out, until the
veggies are tender but not mushy, about ten minutes.
Then add the contents of the 4 cans, slicing the tomatoes a bit so they are
approximately in 1/4's. Stir the pot, add the vinegar and spices, and let all
the ingredients cook together until enough water has boiled out to make the
sauce a desireable consistency. Stir to prevent burning. Remove the Bay leaf
before serving. You can, of course, make a lot of this sauce and freeze it,
which is what I've been doing. I guess you could also use crushed canned
tomatoes, or fresh tomatoes, but I haven't tried it those ways yet.
I started making this sauce because I could not find a single canned or
jarred sauce in any supermarket I've been to that meets all of my require-
ments. It has to be no-oil, no-cheese, no-salt, no-sugar, lots of veggies,
and delicious. I'd love some feedback from any of you who make it (puns are
always intended) <g>

Yes, it is hard to eat right when you are busy. It takes a lot of thinking
and planning beforehand so you have quick and healthy things to eat avail-
able even when you're on the go. I like making things in big batches and
freezing them, and I LOVE Rubbermaid plastic containers because they come in
so many sizes and I can premeasure just the amount of food I want for a
serving.
I had a scare today - I was on my way out of the apartment to go food
shopping when my elderly cat Tipsie (approximate age 19) had a seizure. I've
had this cat since 1978 and it never happened before. I thought I was going
to lose her. I took her to the vet, and they ran a lot of expensive tests,
watched her for awhile, and let me take her home. So far she seems OK but I
have to call for the results of the test tomorrow. I hope she 'will be OK.

Val, I've been lurking, as well as out of town. We helped my youngest son and
his wife move to New Orleans -- to a third-floor apartment. If my knee hadn't
been acting up, I probably would have gotten some good exercise going up and
down stairs. Then I went to a tournament in New Orleans.
I gained a few pounds over the holidays after a very deceptive period of time
where it looked like I was maintaining. I was so disgusted.
But it looks like I've taken about a pound of it off so far, and I'm trying to
be good.
My oldest son and his wife and two little girls, who have been here since
October, are closing on their house a week from tomorrow, and they plan to
move that weekend. It should be easy to clear out the junk food then, and get
down to business more.
Good to hear from you.

the hollidays cause my 'friends' bought me mucho ice cream and chocolate (bad

hockey and will get back into my routine and will probably get trimed up right

everything I like and overdo it whenever possible. My system will not be able
to handle the overload and, therefore , I should loose weight accordingly.

No need to get too discouraged about gaining a few over the holidays.
It's a rough time for all of us. It sounds like you'll soon be on track again
anyway. I've been increasing my exercycle riding daily. The mileage thingie
is broken on it so I don't know how far I go, but I put in a tape and make
sure I go through more music each time. I've also begun tightening the
tension a little. I really seem to be improving and having more stamina, which
is what I need to actually get started exercising.
Hope to see you name among the losers next week.
David:
Well.... the underwater hockey sounds like terrific exercise, but I
don't think you "diet plan" would work for me. :)
Oh yes, ice cream and chocolate are a wonderful combination. Mmmmm.

Yes, underwater hockey is a terrific exercise and a lot of fun. You can check
it out in the Scuba BBS, Catagory 8, Topic 12 (underwater games), and Catagory
10, Topic 21 (keeping fit). I get there by typing m8009-20 and then Set 8,
etc. I used it as my main therapy and workout after an extended hospital stay
where I gained over 35 pounds.

ps. I lost it all in a few months <brag - brag>.

I'm continuing to lose, although I've been sleeping a lot lately. I think
my body needed to catch up on a lot of sleep - I had a couple of rough spots
last year, and for the first time in my life, had weeks and months of insomnia
which was very disturbing. Now I'm getting back on track with sleep and food,
shortly to be followed by regular excercise.
Has anyone ever made their own corn tortillas? I was shown how to make them
by a new friend I met in NY at a Vegetarian Summerfest last August, and they
are so easy and filling! Again, if anyone wants a description of how to make
them, I'll be glad to post it.
David A. - welcome! When you lost that 35 lbs, were you just doing the
underwater hockey, or did you modify your food intake as well?
Val - No, that "diet plan" wouldn't work for me either! Congratulations on
your improvement and loss! What kind of exercycle do you have?
Mary - welcome back! Yes, I'm sure it's difficult to keep junk food out of
the house with kids around. You've been through a stressful time, and I'm
sure things will be easier for you now. You can do it!
Lloyd - how's it going? Sometimes I've found that if I start excercising
again right after a gain, the lbs seem to come off faster than if I start
excercising from a plateau. I don't know why, but it's helped me to see a
gain as an opportunity instead of a failure.
Carson - wow! 4 lbs, that's great. Have you just started recently? I don't
recall your post.
Sharon - How are you doing?

I am currently dieting with my wife. We are using Ultra Slimfast it
seems to be working. Before we started dieting we would prepare our food based
on what we were craving. Now we prepare our food based on the calorie intake.
This was is boring and bland. The only thing that helps is that we are both
crazy about spices and we make sure that we spice everything.

I can't post this week: My scale is screwy. Either it needs a new
battery, or it's a piece of junk, or both. The first time I weighed myself,
I got two readings, 3 pounds apart. Then, after a shower and a cup of coffee
-- which you would think would ADD weight, I got two readings, 3 pounds
apart, but one pound less than before.
This P.O.J. is not a serious research tool!
Consumer Reports had an evaluation of scales recently. When I get back from
Washington -- long hours, shoving food in my mouth to keep going <sigh> --
I'm buying a new one.

I can sympathize with your scale troubles. Yes, the electronic ones are not
the most trustworthy, are they? My husband noticed that if you want a
reliable second reading on ours, you have to let about ten minutes pass
between weighings, or it can go off by as much as (no joke) 100 lbs. It's
bizarre to step on a scale and see a reading of 37 lbs! (I'm no anorexic).
What brands does CR reccomend?

WElcome aboard... share your successes and failures (if any) with your
reduction in weight. The ultimate goal of this topic is feeling good about
yourself whether or not you lose weight and lots of support if you want/need
to do it. This will help us function better, not only in our personal lives,

Brian,
If used properly, Ultra Slim Fast can be great. The biggest problem is that
it is very controlled eating, WHILE you're using it. You have to make a very
consious effort to change your lifestyle AFTER you're through with it in order
for it to work. Studies are now coming out confirming what I thought - you're
better off overweight than having weight that yo-yos up and down.
Also, it takes willpower to stick to the Slim Fast plan. I found that if I
used a malted machine and really beat it up to about double the original
volume (tons of air), it was more satisfying. I successfully lost about 60
lbs, 2 1/2 pounds a week using that. I did find partway through, that I had
to start exercising to help it along.
One problem I have with Slim Fast is that it has Nutra Sweet. While I would
use that for a very limited time, I wouldn't for a long time. Too many
stories, including people I know. Were it not for that, I'd be happy having
it for breakfast all the time.

My exercycle is just a plain vanilla low-cost bike that I got from
Monkey Wards 10 or 15 years ago. It doesn't include any upper body motion,
just peddling. I can tighten the tension so it feels like I'm riding uphill.
I started out recently with zero tension and am increasing it as I feel
stronger. My ex-boyfriend's son broke the mileage thingie years ago, which is
why I time myself instead of keep track of miles/speed. I like peddling to
music as it makes it more (well, a little) fun.
Lloyd:
I'm using a cheap bathroom scale that's about 24 years old. It's not
accurate compared to when I get weighed at the doc's, but it is consistent, so
I can tell how much I'm losing ::thinking positively:: and that's all that
matters to me right now. If I _ever_ get down to less than 120 again, I might
just buy a good scale to reward myself. No need to take the money out of the
savings account for awhile though.

Sue, underwater hockey is the only work out I get. It is great. Yes, my diet
was changed. I was hospitalized for 2nd and 3rd degree burns over much of my
body (gasoline explosion - not nice) and was on a 6000 calorie, high protien
diet so my body could repair itself, etc. I gained my weight then (no
exercise - in bed unable to move for months - also not nice). I had to buy
all new larger sized clothes when I got out. As soon as the doctors allowed,
I started playing underwater hockey on a regular basis and it uses lots of
callories and I lost that pesky 35 pounds and got back to being able to wear
my old size again. I eat a lot. I try not to eat white sugar or white flour
(except in ice cream where the fat retards the metabolism of the white sugar
sucrose).
Mary, I do not have any plans to cut back, just exercise more.
Tonight I ate at Western Sizzlin and ate two steaks, one large baked potato,
(did not eat the bread) two or three salids, vegitable soup, sampled most
vegitables, onion rings, a couple of things I did not know what they were,
some little shrimps, and finished off two helpings (they were smallish) of
soft serve ice cream covered with whipped cream. I was full after that and
went home, watched some TV, and logged on to Genie.

<burp>
I had a glass of low fat milk just a few minutes ago. I guess that I am not
cutting back.

Speaking about Slim Fast... I don't do it! What I do instead is take an
envelope of Knox Gelatine, some juice - orange maybe (about 1/2 cupor a tad
more, some ice cubes, and maybe 1/2 banana or 1/2 organge, or whatever fruit
you want... not too many calories, remember, then put it in the blender and
whip the heck out of it... it will froth with lots of air and give you a
fruity slush, and especially with some banana in it -- is quite satisfying and
nourishing at the same time and IT HAS **NO** ASPERTAME!!!
Just be innovative, but do use an envelope of Knox Gelatine as your base, and
ice cubes.

I didn't do the fruit juice Slim Fast - I used the chocolate Ultra Slim Fast
with milk. I don't think your gelatin would quite be the same, and the
chocolate was what made it acceptable to me. For the first week it tasted
like cardboard, and it took many months before it actually tasted good.
I also had to fight the feeling that it was missing the ice cream - the
previous use of that malted machine had lots of chocolate syrup, and ice
cream.

I've lost weight before, many times, and I've been more comfortable when I'm
eating just regular, normal foods. I can see using the Slim Fast type of
stuff for getting off those annoying plateaus, but I also just don't trust
Nutrasweet. But everyone has to do what they feel comfortable with.
Val - I assume that Monkey Wards" is Montgomery Wards? LOL! It's better to
keep track of aerobic excercise by amount of time anyway, rather than speed or
distance. I've heard from several sources that it 'sbetter to walk at a
moderate to brisk pace for 40 minutes than to run twice the distance in 20
minutes. Increase the time you excercise, but always have enough breath to be
able to carry on a conversation during.
David A. - Sorry to hear about your burns. My husband suffered a similar
experience while a teenager - carbeurator exploded on him, burning his arms,
abdomen, head. Not terribly severe, but he was hospitalized for I believe a
few months. Nasty experience to go through. How old were you when it
happened? Are you scarred much? My hubby has some scars, not too bad.
It's great if you can control the weight with excercise alone. I need to
cut back and excercise for maximum results, but I haven't gotten myself quite
motivated yet for regular excercise. I have been going for walks a few times
a week, but I will work up to doing it daily.
Sharon - glad to hear it! I don't consider myself to be dieting either, and
I don't feel deprived. I'm working on only eating when I'm hungry, and
sometimes it's hard for me to tell. It's also hard for me to figure if I',m
eating enough some days, because I'm not used to eating as seldom as I'm
finding myself doing. It's weird for me to have only one meal a day some
days, but if I'm not hungry, I just don't eat. My husband who is thin and
always has been eats like that, so I figured I'd try it. So far, so good!
Which spices are you talking about being high in sodium? I've never heard
that before. Do you mean mixed seasonings, or things like oregano, parsley,
thyme, etc.?
Lloyd - are you in DC because of the inauguration? I'm living in DC, but
I'll be watching it on tv (warmer, less crowds).

Sue, I was burned when I was 52 years old (2 years ago) and I am healing well.
Some neighborhood kids were doing something stupid with gasoline and I saw it
and ran over to help. I got them out, but not myself. Some called me stupid
others were kinder and called me nice things. It is a fact that some would
have died if I did not react, so it is O.K. Anyway, I too am a chocoholic and
an ice cream addict and I eat red meat. Are these vices or what? Underwater
hockey (I play three times a week now) helps me keep in shape. I am 54 years
old, a bit over 6 feet tall, and weigh about 175 pounds. I can not pinch an
inch anywhere around my waist and am trying to get back into the shape I think
I was <g> without spending any more time or effort than my three times a week
playing hockey. I give advice to young ladies (models - I am a professional
photographer) about diet so that they will photograph better. It works! Eat
anything you want to eat as long as it does not have white flour or white
sugar in it. Eat the hamburger, but not the bun. Complexions clear up in no
time. Isn't that a sign of better health? I can tell you why it works. Where
is the right topic for that?

Joni! I did not mean to imply that the kids or their parents felt ungraitful
- quite the contrary. It is outsiders, those who think risking self is
stupid. Some think I should know better - that I "learned my lesson", etc.
They are wrong. I hope I will have the strength to do it again if the
situation requires. I guess I am not a man of the 80's. Maybe in a few ways
I am old fasshoned. I am not religious but I believe in helping others as I
hope others may help me if I need it. Maybe that is too idealistic but things
have a way of coming back. Look at all the good people on Genie helping
others. There is hope for the world. Some of it right here. Topic drift
alert!!!!!
Anyway it appears that you are helping keep track of progress here. I am
pretty stable as long as I get my exercise (play, etc.) and cut out things
that digest too easily (like sucrose that goes directly into the bloodstream
before it has to be 'digested' in the intestines). I only O.D. on ice cream
on special ocasions (unfortunately any ocasion can be special) and do have
trouble with chocolate (I do not buy it but others do and it is impolite to
turn it down). I eat a large, but sensible breakfast (no sweets except what
nature puts in the banana), and go from there.

Dear All,
I have been a lurker on this topic for some time, but would like to become a
participant. A little about myself..... I have been fighting the weight
battle most of my adult life and have won a few times, but the lbs. seem to
sneak back. I need to take off between 20 and 30 lbs. I am very conscious of
what I eat and do very well during the day, its between 7 and 10 pm that I
have a problem. Usually when I'm tired and the willpower goes out the window.
I am exercising daily. I do crunches, weights for upper arms, use Suzanne
Sommer's thigh master, and use an Alpine skiing machine. A few months ago I
lost 18 lbs of the weight, then we moved to a different state, I got stressed,
quit exercising, and put it back on. Anyway, I am trying to get off the diet
treadmill. I just want to eat less in a healthy way and tone my body properly
and make it a normal way of life. Fad diets do not work for me. I bought a
counted cross-stitch kit and have begun doing it while watching tv in the
evenings to keep from snacking. Also, I use that time to work on my nails.
(Hard to snack with wet nails!)
Anyway, I want to make even more of a commitment by joining you all. I think
the weekly weigh in and the motivation I feel from all of you, will definitely
help. Just wanted to check in and tell you that you seem to be a great group
and are doing a fantastic job of motivating each other. All hints, tips, etc.
are gratefully welcome. Joni, will get you my stats before Sunday am.
Hope to see you on the downside...........Linda

Welcome, Linda. You've come to a place where we can identify with you and are
making the same effort you are.
Hi, Val. Still hanging in there with the house full of people. WHen they leave
and I get my house back in order, I plan to start an afgan for the youngest
(newlyweds). Years ago I made Charles (the oldest) a ripple-crochet afgan in
Dallas Cowboy colors. Larger than the pattern called for, since it was for a
guy. Now David wants one, too. That should keep my hands busy.

Lloyd - What kind of crash diet are you planning?
Mary - hang in there! Sometimes it really helps to have some kind of
unmistakeable cut-off point after which you feel it's YOUR time. I was "on
hold" for quite awhile until I finally moved to DC in December. Now the
weight is just melting off, and I'm really pleased.
Hi Joni - is the busy schedule helping you in your watching your food, or is
it difficult for you lately?
Hi Peachie - How are you doing?
Linda - welcome! Sounds like you are doing well by yourself with excercise
and the cross-stitch is a good idea. However, you can't do that every night
so how about preparing low-cal evening snacks to have around, like fat-free
pretzels, rice wafers, hot-air popcorn, carrot or celery sticks? Also, a
piece of fruit or two can satisfy the desire for sweets without adding any fat
to your diet. I love raspberries, and lately I've been buying them frozen
(since they're not available fresh this time of year where I live) and I mix
them with canned pears (in their own juice). They are so good!
Hi Val - How are you doing?

Hi there Sue. The Old Peach is just trying to hang in here with a lowfat plan.
The problem I have is 3 fold. I find that if it's a no fat or FF food I want,
then it has sugar and high sodium. No sugar, then it's fat. No salt--sugar and
fat. How can I win?
Really though, I have been going to the F&W board and getting lots of ideas
and recipes and these are helping some. The main thing I need to do is get
back on the treadmill. I do so well when I use it. I am trying to find a way
to work it back into my routine now that it's tax season.

I like to joke around, but has anyone here tried the eat anything, anytime you
feel like it, diet? The one where you eat anything EXCEPT things that have
white sugar or white flour in them. The logic for this working is that white
sugar (sucrose) and white flour (highly refined - broken down) upset the
body's natural digesting sequences and screw up everything else so the body is
not able to regulate itself properly and you get FAT and your cholestrol goes
UP and........well, has anybody tried it except me? It works for me and works
for young ladies trying to clear up their complexions for modeling.
Is it too simple for people to expect it to work? Is it too simple that
nobody can make any money on it (nothing to sell you)? I really
lost 35 pounds with this and a 3 times a week workout with underwater hockey.
I am today 177 pounds, 6feet 1 inch tall, and over 50 years old. I can not
pinch an inch. Remember, the body makes it's own cholestrol and NO studies
have shown that eating fat (animal fat included) raises the cholestrol leval
in a healthy individual.

Hi all,
Thanks Slimmin' Sue, Mary, Val, Joni, and Lloyd, for the warm welcome. Lloyd,
I am Bill's wife, Linda. Guess I should go back and change the nickname to
Bill/Linda. Yes, I would very much like a reminder to post stats. Thanks,
Lloyd.
Simmin' Sue: like your snack ideas!! I do need to take a break from cross
stitch occasionally. No calories involved, but I may go blind. ;-)
mmmmmmm....raspberries and pears.
I have a wonderful recipe for a low cal lemon cheesecake for those who have to
have a sweet occasionally. It has only 160 calories per slice. If it is ok,
Joni, will post it here in a few days. It is also low fat.
Sue, I decided that if nothing else, I'm going to do the exercising. There
sure are times when I'd rather do anything else, but after I get started and
get into it, it actually relaxes me when I'm through.
It releases those good chemicals into the blood. A good feeling.

Hi. I'm doing better. For the last 6 weeks or so of 1992 I couldn't
concentrate on dieting or exercise so didn't lose any weight. During 1993,
I've already lost 4! I'm beginning to look forward to Sundays so I can send
in my stats. If I notice during the week that I lost a pound or so, I don't
consider it official until Sunday.
I often fluctuate 3-4 lbs from day to day. But it seems that these 4
lbs are real weight loss. I'm looking forward to the day I can wear "slacks"
again instead of stretch pants. The stretch pants are comfy, but I'm getting
tired of them.
I hope you are doing well in '92 also.

Peachie - I know what you mean about finding foods that have no salt, sugar and
are low or no fat also. My solution has been to cook my own, but I know how
tough it is when you're busy! An idea I had but never tried myself is to have
some kind of a food club. You can enlist a bunch of friends to all make a big
batch of one recipe, like for soup or a casserole or spaghetti sauce, whatever
you like, and then exchange with each other so everyone gets a variety of home
cooked, low fat, no salt, no sugar foods they can freeze and use all week.
I'm lucky right now, because I've got the time alone at home to do a lot of
cooking, but if you have a lot of friends nearby in the same situation, you
might want to try it.
What kins of treadmill do you have? I would like to start walking more
regularly myself. I so far am only getting my excercise by walking to the
supermarket (about a mile away), but it's a start. And the lbs are coming off,
but I know that if I don't step up the excercise, I'll eventually plateau.
Thanks for your encouragement, and I know you'll do great too!
David - I basically am eating anything, anytime I feel like it, but I am also
making sure that what I have in the house to eat is all low-fat foods. I gave
up white sugar and white flour years ago, and that's not all there is to it.
As they say, fat makes you fat. Young women and men in general have an easier
time losing weight than do mature women. Metabolism is a factor, lean to fat
ratio is a factor. Especially older women who've dieted in the past, who have
lost weight and gained back more each time, and thereby slowed down their
metabolisms. I'm glad that the way of eating you employ has worked for you
and the young models you work with, but it won't necessarily work for
everyone.[D The excercise certainly is great, and I hope to be posting soon
about my progress in that department. I'm really pleased about how I'm doing
without much excercise, but I need it, not just to lose weight, but to improve
my energy and general well-being.
Also, where did you get your information about animal fat not raising the
cholesterol levels of healthy individuals? I don't have any studies I can
quote you about it, but I have personal knowledge of several individuals
including my father and my sister's sister-in-law that had high cholesterol
levels until they reduced their fat, especially animal fat, intakes.
Linda - Yes, it can be hard to overcome the inertia and start excercising.
Whenever I've been away from it for awhile (like now - it's been almost a year
since I was really regularly excercising, lifting weights and doind
stairmaster aerobics) and I go back to it, I feel so good that I say to myself
"What took me so long to get back to doing something that feels so good?" But
I am working up to it, slowly biut surely.
Val - I look forward to Sunday weigh-ins too! I fluctuate a few pounds too,
when I was a member of Weight Watchers, it was explained to me that when you
are burning fat, it converts to water before your body releases it, and weeks
when you are losing, you can show a gain in the middle of the week if you
retain that water. That's one big reason that diet programs don't recommend
you weighing yourself daily, because it tends to discourage you when you feel
you've been "good" and you see a weight gain. But also, if you are doing
excercise that builds muscle, weighing in can be deceptive since muscle weighs
more than fat, so you can lose inches and actually gain pounds.
I've never had a skin calipers test to determine percentage of body fat, or
been weighed underwater (two methods often considered more reliable than the
scale to measure fat-loss), but I know when I start my weights routines that
the lbs may not come off seemingly as fast, but if I add more lean muscle
tissue to my body, I know I'm becoming more efficient at burning fat, and my
clothes will get looser. I'm rather tired of my "fat clothes" too.
One thing I am concerned about is my skin. I've been about 60 lbs overweight
for close to 15 years now, and I don't want my skin to hang. I know that
drinking water and excercising will help avoid it, but is there anyone out
there who has lost a lot of weight after being fat for many years who can tell
me their experiences with this?
Let's keep up the good work, gang!
-Slimmin' Sue

Lovely Lemon Cheesecake
1 whole graham cracker, crushed

Just before serving, decorate top of cheesecake with pie filling and cut.

I bought my treadmill about 2 years ago from Sears. Calculates almost

You seem to be doing well on your treadmill. I have one of those Alpine
skiing machines that I use everyday. It has one of those elec. gadgets too.
It tells how many calories burned, but I swear its wrong. After 15 min. it
shows only 20 calories. Feels like it should be at least 200!
Some time ago I bought some diet software but hadn't used it in awhile. Since
joining all of you, I decided to use it again. You list all foods eaten
during the day and it gives an analysis by calories, vitamins, sodium, fat,
cholesterol, etc. Last night for dinner we had Cornish hens and a little
stovetop stuffing and raw vegetables. I was quite suprised when I did the
analysis and found stovetop stuffing at the very top for sodium content and
FAT!!!
Till next time,

Hi Peachie,
Applesauce cornbread? Sounds good, did you ever post the recipe here? And if
not, would you? If there are eggs or milk I can adapt it to vegan easily
enough with egg replacer and soy milk. I haven't yet checked out the Food &
Wine BB, but I'll get there eventually.
Good idea not to weigh yourself at this time, you know how you're eating and
if you keep it up with the treadmill, you're bound to lose soon.
Mary - I've tried the Mr. Phipps pretzel chips and the tater crisps, and
they're both good. I also found a new potato crisp in the health food store
(I don't recall the name at the moment, but I'll write it later when I get to
the store), and they are also really low in fat and taste great. A regular
bag of potato chips, if you were to eat the whole bag (which I'm sure all of
us have done at one time or another - or many!) has about 60 grams of fat.
When you're trying to lose weight, women should try to keep their intake of
fat to between 20 and 30 per day, and men, between 30 and 40. So a bag of
potato chips has enough fat for two to three days! The potato crisps I found
have only 10 grams of fat per bag, so even if you get a bit out of control,
you haven't done that much damage. Of course there still is the sodium
problem. I also like various different kinds of rice crackers and wafers
found in health food stores, and while some people don't think they have
enough taste, I find that if you start cutting salt down and out of your diet,
you appreciate the flavors of plainer food more. I used to put salt on food,
but I stopped that over 15 years ago (it was one of the first big dietary
changes I made, I was in Junior High and started doing a project about food
additives, and discovered I didn't need all that salt).
Joni - It's my turn to get left out of the stats, I guess. Should I cry? Or
will you get around to each of us in turn? <g>

Re: Stove-top Stuffing & sodium.
Yes, almost everything I really like is loaded with sodium. :(
Besides, I really like salt, and it's hard for me to cut back. I've never
found a salt substitute that I like. It's _salt_ that I like, not something
that can be substituted for it. My Dad did great with cutting salt out almost

Mary,
You're welcome. Hope you like the cheesecake.
Val,
I LOVE salt, too. My weakness. I'll take something salty and crunchy over
sweets anytime. I am trying to use Morton's Lite Salt.
I know it's not salt-free, but has half the sodium of regular. I have a
tendency to use more of it, though, and am trying not to. It is definitely
not the same on popcorn, though. I don't have to watch it for health reasons;
I have low to normal blood pressure, low, low cholesterol, etc.; it just
causes me to retain so much :-(
I have been feeling extra tired this week. Don't understand why. I'm getting
the exercise, taking vitamins, and eating sensibly. I added two more minutes
onto the skiing machine; that's the only difference. Maybe my body is going
into an adjustment phase????

Sharon - Hurray! I know what you mean about reminding yourself that the food
will be there tomorrow, and eating what you want, but controlling the
portions. We humans are biologically programmed for survival, and to too many
of us that means "eat all you can whenever you can, for tomorrow we may
starve". It worked well for us in the distant past, but it doesn't apply
today, and it's hard to convince the brain to override the body. For me, it's
also been difficult to overcome the psychology that was set up in our family,
which was my dad and I tried to eat and my mother tried to limit us. As soon
as I started making my own money, it meant power to buy and eat whatever I
wanted - which in JHS, was candy.
It's really great to be able to be an adult, with the power to make my own
choices, but there has been a part of me still all these years that felt I had
to prove that I could eat all I wanted of whatever I wanted. You know the
result of that - fat. It's not completely under control, but I can have
chocolate now and again without eating the whole bar, potato chips without
eating the whole bag, etc. But I don't keep those foods in my house, to make
it even easier for me, as well as healthier. I do find that when I allow
myself to eat whatever I want that's in the house (which is all low-fat
now),I'm eating so much less that I'm amazed. Part of it was trying to eat
the way my husband eats. We don't have any formal mealtimes in our household,
and since I'm vegetarian and he's not, we each make our own meals. My husband
only eats when he's hungry, and when he is he eats whatever he's in the mood
for. He's always been thin. If he's not hungry, he'll go all day without
eating (which my Jewish mother finds hard to deal with, even though she's
never really been one of those 'Eat, Bubbuleh, or you'll get skinny and die'
types). I'm not sure how well handle meals when we have kids, but that's
probably years away at this point.
Val - About mashed potatoes - do you like mustard? Lemon and garlic powder?
If so, you might try those on mashed potatoes. I know, it's hard to give up a
taste you like, especially one that's in so many processed foods. I used to
put salt on tomatoes, popcorn, corn on the cob, and ketchup on a lot of other
foods I ate when I was a kid, like hamburgers, eggs, chicken, french fries -
and ketchup is of course loaded with salt. I really don't remember how I
managed to give it up so completely, but I don't miss it at all now. I leave
it out of any recipes I make, and I read labels and don't buy food that has
added salt if I can find the salt-free kind or make it myself. I only know it
can make a big difference in losing weight. I read a book awhile back by Eda
LeShan, the children's psychologist, and she had lost over 60 lbs and kept it
off by going to the famous Rice Diet clinic in North Carolina. She emphasized
how she had always eaten foods laden with salt since she was a child, and she
went on the Rice Diet in her 50's, I believe. One of the main tenets at the
clinic was a very strict no salt policy. It has to do not only with fluid
retention, but about the interplay between electrolyte balance (sodium is one
of the body's electrolytes, along with acids and bases) and the appestat, the
body/brain's appetite control. So if you can do it gradually, you should be
better off without the salt. Good luck, I know it won't be easy for you.
Linda - It sounds quite likely that you are going through an adjustment
period. You mentioned excercise and food intake, but (it may seem obvious,
but I'll ask anyway) how about sleep? So many of us (me too) don't get enough
sleep. Especially when you're upping your activity level, and reducing your
weight, your body needs its rest.

One year when my oldest son was stationed in Germany, we talked to him in

"An afgan in Dallas Cowboy colors." Long pause. I said, "What's your second

Thanks for the tip about Vege-Sal. I'll look for it and try it.
I'm also short of willpower. If it's in the house or within reach,
I'll eat it :(
Sue:
I never thought of the "I'm an adult and I can buy and eat anything I
want" theory. But it sure does sound like me. I really enjoy being able to
buy what I want and eating the whole bag (of Cheetos, etc.) if I want too.
Understanding the psychology behind that might help me curtail it.
Mashed potatoes with mustard? :b But maybe they'd be okay with
lemon and garlic powder (although I usually use garlic =salt=). I also hate
salt-free catsup. I'd rather do without than have it that way.
I had a boss who went to N.Carolina for that rice diet. He lost 65
lbs, but gained it back within a year. While he was on the diet he was denied
everything he liked (including alcohol). But when he got back home, he just
went back to old habits after the first few weeks. It was too drastic a
change for him apparently.

It's hard to figure exactly what I did this week, in terms of weight loss.
(The rest can be explained by memory loss.) I now have the electronic scale
allegedly working again. Earlier in the week, it showed I might have lost as
much as 5-7 pounds this week (?), but, following last night's Peanut Buster
Parfait from DQ, I'll go with 2.
I exercised 3 times. I ate less.
Now I go on the overnights for a week and backslide some more. :(
Has anyone else noticed that home scales are more optimistic than the ones in
doctors' offices and health clubs? Is it just this crummy Sunbeam digital,
or all home scales? And is it done on purpose?

Hi Sue, no I never posted the recipe because here's what you do. Make your
cornbread like you normally do except instead of say 1/3C of oil, use 1/3C
applesauce. I also use nonfat milk and eggbeaters. It is really very, very
good and even my husband likes it.
Read in our paper Thuirsday that there is a FF potato chip out. It's called
Louise's Original FF potato chip and it comes in 4 flavors. Haven't found it
yet but will look for it.
One more thing. I buy guilless gourmet saltless nacho cips. Received a survey
from them the other day and to do the surve they would send me 1 of 3 gifts.
The gift I chose was a case (24/1 oz bags) of the chips. I love them with

Peachie: Sounds like you've found some great products. Let us know if you
find the chips. Sounds good. Are you just trying to limit fat from your diet?
I know alot of people have lost weight just by cutting fat and eating
everything else. Rosanne and Tom Arnold have lost alot this way. There is a
woman who appears regularly on the Home Show who has a program called "Stop
the Insanity", who says you can lose weight by cutting only fat. She says you
can eat 32 baked potatoes if you want to, just don't eat fat. Don't know if
this is just hype. For me, seems I have to take calories into consideration.
Val: Hope you get over your cold soon. Can be miserable this time of year.
Thanks for the info on M. McButter, Val and Joni.
Val, I agree with you. Most men, it seems, can lose weight more easily just
by cutting back a little and exercising. It seems just to fall off. Women's
bodies want to hang on to every fat cell. Especially after age 40, it seems.
Just a fact. I'm for everyone doing whatever seems to work for them. No one
of us are the same. And if making use of different products, whether Madison
Avenue hype or not, seems to help, why not? I believe in good nutrition and
in exercise. I don't see where using a salt substitute or butter substitute
violates this belief.

Mary -
I started a baby blanket for a friend of mine when she was pregnant. Her
daughter is two now, and (you guessed it) - I never did get around to
finishing it. But I did make one for her son the year prior, and she loved
it. Maybe I'll complete the other one someday...
Val -
It really took me a long time until I could have a bag of chips or a box of
crackers or a pint of sorbet around without finishing it all as soon as I
opened it. Part of what helps is holding the food in my hand and actually
saying to myself "I CAN eat this all if I want to. Now, do I WANT to?" Same
goes for dinners in restaurants. It's only within the last year or so that
I've really "gotten" the fact that I can eat half of my dinner and take the
rest of it home for lunch or dinner the next day. That way I don't leave the
restaurant stuffed like I always used to. Also, that way I can have a salad
(with only a few slices of lemon and some pepper for dressing) and some bread
(which I eat without butter or margarine), and load up on those nice healthy
carbohydrates at the same time I cut down on the protein in the entree.
The kind of mustard I like on potatoes is a stoneground dijon-style mustard,
not plain old yellow. But you may not like that one either. Do you have any
Ruby Tuesday restaurants around your area? They carry their own brand
Alternative Seasoning that is sodium free and is really tasty on potatoes. It
has a blend of dehydrated vegetables (onion, carrot, garlic, red bell
peppers, tomato), spices including mustard, orange peel, soy oil, dehydrated
parsley and dill, and lemon oil. Yum!

Linda - Glad to hear you're feeling better. I was at my health food store the
other night and I noticed a product that was for sprinkling on popcorn, I
think it was a blend of spices. I'll look for it again next time I go and see
what's in it. I know my friend's dad uses Butter Buds, and Cher and Robert
Haas also recommend them for folks who like the taste of butter without so
much fat.
I have lost weight just cutting out fat, but of course it's best to combine
approaches, to excercise modrately in addition to the dietary changes you
make. I have been here in DC now for nearly six weeks, and I still haven't
gotten myself motivated to do more than just walk to and from the store (about
a mile each way) about three times a week. My sleep schedule is all screwy,
I've been getting to sleep around 4 am and waking after noon, and I've been
doing a lot of stuff around the house, which I need to do, but I do want to
start my workouts again. But I am being patient with myself. And it's funny
you should mention "Stop The Insanity" because I just saw an info-mercial for
it for the first time about a week ago. She repeated a theme that I know is
true; if you want to lose weight and keep it off, you have to do three things -
you have to EAT (the right stuff, of course, lots of carbos, moderate protein,
fiber, and low fat), you have to BREATHE, (oxygen is fuel just as much as food
is), and you have to MOVE. I'm doing well with the eating, but I know I
breathe too shallowly most of the time, and I'm not moving enough.
About what David said, I'm not sure whether or not one of my posts got
uploaded, but I wrote a long diatribe about the some of the things he said
earlier. It seems David has found that for himself, and for young women
models he works with, moderate intake of food and moderate excercise has been
useful in losing excess pounds. I pointed out that for men it's always easier
for them to lose because they have proportionately more muscle mass (lean body
tissue) than women, and muscle is more metabolically active than fat - men and
women of equal size and consuming equal calories and performing equal amounts
of activity burn fat at different rates; men usually faster. And since women
are designed for baby-producing and feeding, their bodies "want" to hold on to
the fat. As women get older (men too), their metabolism slows down somewhat,
and especially women who have previously gone on crash diets (which many if
not most American women have done, in response to ridiculous pressure to live
up to unrealistic standards), because every time the body perceives famine, it
becomes more efficient at holding on to fat. Everyone has to find the best
way for him/herself to lose weight, and if appealing to your taste buds with
imitation products helps you avoid feeling deprived and helps you stay on
track with a healthy eating program, great. Do it. It's great if you don't
have much trouble losing weight. But don't expect that others with different
body types and dieting histories will always have such an easy time of it.
(End diatribe) I hope this wasn't just a repeat of an earlier post, but I
wanted it said.
Lloyd - Both of my scales are still screwy (or is it again?) The electronic
one hasn't given me an accurate weight in weeks now, and I really should just
chuck it in the trash. The other one which had been fine for so long, is now
fluctuating about 4-5 lbs in either direction at any given time, so I am
DEFINIETELY going to buy a new one ASAP, hopefully today when I wake up.
Why does overnights mean backsliding? Isn't there anything you can do to
make it easier for yourself to eat the way you know you want to so you can
meet your goal? Come on Lloyd, don't give up before you even start! What can
we do to encourage you?
Hi Peachie - I made two different kinds of muffins last night, and I used
applesauce instead of oil in each of them, and they came out great! Thanks
for the tip. Have you found the FF chips yet? I'm going to ask about them in
my store. I love potato chips! Those guiltless gourmet tortilla chips, are
they the ones that are baked instead of fried? I've eaten those fat free corn
chips, and they are great. Especially if youre making guacamole, which has so
much fat itself, it's good to have a fat-free corn chip to go with them.
Val - sorry to hear about your cold. I hope you're feeling better.
Joni - I bought a copy of Fitness magazine, and saw the ads for Stair Climber
Plus. I had never seen a stair climber like that before - I recognized the
name as one you own. Does yours come with the arm attachments? When you use
it, do your feet hit the bottom on every step, or can you push off the pedal
to adjust to your own step height? I still own a big old clunky Sears stepper
I bought years ago, but I'd love something more compact if I can sellthe old
one, and I want to compare stair machines.
I hope to have accurate stats for next week, if I can find a decent scale this
week. I hope my last readings weren't too far from the truth.

When I am really trying to cut back, my husband starts eating double

Frozen yogurt? Frozen yogurt? I love it! I finished off an Edy's Frozen
Yogurt Inspiration yesterday (Cookies & Cream). Probably the frozen yogurt
has more sugar in it than ice cream so may not be as good as I (we) wish it to
be for us. I have been diluting my ice creams and frozen yogurts with good
plain yogurt half and half. That way I can eat more and feel less guilty.
Also it cuts down on the sweetness. I buy yogurt by the quart (about 1.oo to
1.39). Good yogurt - not Dannon or junkey store brands that are really yogurt
flavored jello. Hey, if you were mine <g> I would really sabotage you. The
feeding frenzy has died down - nobody is buying great gobs of ice cream for me
these days and I only buy it a couple of times a week.
.
BTW I was at an attorney's office the other day (he is very over weight)
and he gave himself a blood test. I was curious so he showed me (pricked his
finger, he did). His reading for sugar was around 400. I do not know what it
means, but we did mine and he said mine was normal (it was exactly 100), and
this was about a half hour after eating ice cream (around 10 am). Any ideas
what this means?

Linda - I wouldn't worry too much about the popcorn addiction, after all, it's
very little calories itself, it's high in carbos, and it's mostly what you put
on it that makes it fattening, and you're not using butter, right? And it's
got fiber, which is good.
I bought a new scale, and the day I got it and weighed myself, it was seven
pounds heavier than what I thought I weighed. I was NOT happy, but I also had
been eating foods with fat more the few days prior to that, so I cut back on
the fat again, and as of this morning, I was back to the weight I thought I
was at before my scales went kablooey. We'll see what happens by Sunday a.m.

You eat to stay awake. It's not just me; everyone I know who occasionally
works overnights -- and even some who work 'em regularly -- does it. Plus,
your schedule is thrown off. I'd wake up this week at 6:30 pm...for dinner

It takes massive willpower. I tried to eat less, and I made sure I had the

Egad! I'm hungry! Hungry! Hungry! Iced tea, juice, jello and such hardly
cuts it. 31.5 more hours to go! I would however like to continue with less
consumption once I get beyond this. Let's see what happens... maybe my will

Lloyd - Good for you! It is a victory to maintain when you were afraid you'd
gain.
Joni - That has also been a difficulty for me the last few days, I'm staying
up too late, and when I'm really sleepy and still awake, my
vigilance/willpower/whatever you want to call it, goes out the window. I need
to normalize my wake-sleep cycle. It's currently way off. My husband wakes
up at 5:20am on weekdays, and that's about when I've been getting to sleep
these past few weeks! I have lain down with him when he goes to sleep, around
11:30 or 12:00, but I lay there for an hour and am just too restless to sleep,
or I sleep for an hour and then wake up alert and can't stand just laying
there when I could be doing something productive (like signing on GEnie...
<g>). Well, he's out of town on business this week, so maybe I can work on
getting into a better sleep/wake cycle.
Sharon and Linda - I have a friend who's in her early forties. She and her
husband are both Italian, second generation American I think.
She is Ms. Superwoman, always on the go, and alwyas has been skinny, except
that when she gets pregnant (they have four kids), she can gain as much as 50
lbs. She told me that her husband LOVES how she looks when she's pregnant,
and is disappointed when after the babies, she's lost all the weight! She
says "Italian men appreciate some flesh on a woman".
Congrats to Florence and Val, our winning losers, and the other maintainers.
Slowly but surely!

about that folks.... yepper Linda... Linda... Linda and not Bill needs to
diet... gotta cement that in my brain.
Linda... yay, the liquid diet is over... exam was this AM and it turned out
fine. But... I've kind of grown to like the *less* kind of diet. Brunch (my
own choosing) saltines, cup of both tea and broth. Tonight was chicken that
was simmered in chicken broth, onions and a tad of salt and pepper. I had one
thigh and some left over rice with the juice. I kind of like, not kind of,
but very much like the not over stuffed feeling. Let's see if I can continue
to eat reasonably. If so, might lose a few pounds, now must throw some
exercising in here to stay healthy.

I need a ruling from the Judges:
Wednesday night, I moved 6-700 pounds of stock downstairs from my office to
the dining room, so another stamp dealer could come over, look at the stuff,
and buy it all. Four hours later, after he decided he wasn't going to buy
anything ("too much stuff," he said, even though we'd discussed that
approximate figure), I moved it all BACK upstairs.
Now I ask the Court: Does that count as exercise when I report in this
Sunday? And how about today's snow-shoveling?
I did make it to the Y yesterday, and got trained on the Stair Master. My
knees are killing me today....which means I'd better work at it.

Me too. Here it is past midnight and I'm still up! More often than
not I get up at 5 or 6 a.m. and start typing. Have to get up early tomorrow
'cause Mom and I are going to mountain dulcimer festival in the morning.
I realize I'd be better able to diet and to ward off colds/flu if I
maintained decent sleeping habits. I'm trying to improve.
Gosh, I haven't been on this RT for about a week. That's why I'm up
so late -- trying to catch up.
Lloyd:
Here's one vote for counting the moving the stock and the snow
shoveling as exercise. When I go shopping and walk around the store for 20-30
minutes, I count it as exercise, even if I don't walk vigorously. My
lifestyle is soooo sedentary that any movement has to be counted as exercise.
Good luck to everyone this week. I've been exercising more.

Hello everybody ! It's been a while <and 10 extra pounds> :)
I've found an excellent book lately: "The Human Fuel Handbook", published by a
small California company called Health For Life. It explains the digestion
process in every detail, and it describes every micronutrient, from vitamin K
to fatty acids, so you end up with knowledge that can compare with that of a
nutritionist. <Thumbing through Marilyne's biochem books wasn't really
useful... it assumed a strong chemistry background; most other books I've
heard about assumed your IQ was no match to that of a sunflower.> I lost five
pounds this week alone just by applying some of that newfound knowledge, and I
don't feel deprived at all.
I just did the following:
- Replaced my evening coffee with a glass of milk and my daily Coke with a
bottle of papaya juice.
- Changed my snacking habits <I stay away from the vending machines and
cookie bars; I take a piece of fruit instead.>
I also drink a full liter of fruit juice DURING my workouts, sending my
insulin level right through the roof.
The only thing I miss, though, is the warmth of that evening coffee. If
someone has a recipe for a hot fruit-based drink, could you please post it
here ?
David:
There is no major difference between white sugar, brown sugar, and turbinado
sugar. Brown sugar is simply white sugar with molasses added at the factory.
Turbinado sugar is the same, but cut in larger chunks. Actually, the very best
sweetener is dark molasses: six times as sweet as sugar, yet half the calories
<I know, it tastes like burnt waffles, but... :) >. You're absolutely right
about white flour. Brown flour has a lot more fiber, which helps the digestion
process while slowing down sugar digestion. That's excellent advice to give
your models.
Lloyd:
Thanks for reminding me even though I was absent; it kept me focused on that
goal. You and Joni are doing a great job !
All:
I need some advice. My grand-mother is just about to retire. She's 70; she's
extremely active and lively (she walks 2 hours/day, even through Quebec City's
dreaded winter) -- she worked at a department store for the last few decades,
earning the "best salesperson of the week award" almost every week during that
period <that's a big, upscale department store, so it's no small feat -- many
young tigers work there.> She eats right simply because she listens to her
body. Problem is, she expects to loosen up during her retirement, indulge in
food, and stop exercising. I'm trying to talk her into joining a bi-weekly
exercise program (she's a widow who lives alone, so she will have no
support/motivation from peers) and into taking calcium supplements (my great-
grandmother, just as lively as my grandmother, suffered from osteoporosis.)
She's not terribly excited about it all. The only books and programs I've
found which target that age group assume that their readers are frail and
ignorant. I'd like her to join a group so they can exercise together. Do you
know of a good exercise-related publication which targets the 50-60s ? What
else could I do ?

Louis-Eric, yes, I know. And I like Molasses (which I like to kid about by
saying "mole what?"). And I do tell them that the commercial brown sugar is
just white sugar with a few things in it to make it brown. I do not believe
that honey is good for humans but I do not go into all kinds of things - just
KISS (for the uninitiated that stands for Keep It Simple, Stupid) - and it
works. With this 'system' you can eat the hambugger and MacBuggerkins or
whatever, but do not eat the catchup or the bun. It is not perfect, but it
works. Even their 'whole wheat' bun is mostly white flower with a little of
the other in so that they can sell it to those who want to eat healthier.
Bon apitete or whatever David A.
BTW I just read the label on some granola bars that made it into my home -
poison! They are worse than candy bars! AAAAArrrrgghhhhhhhh!

Try avoiding so much fruit juice. Juice is REALLY fattening. You'd be better
off having a fruit itself than a glass of juice.
What about herbal tea or extract with hot water?

Sharon, juice fattening? It is not fatty, but it is just a sugar in water and
you know my opinion about sugars, albeit fructose is less bad than sucrose.
Water is important and if it takes a flavoring to get someone to drink it,
then it is not all bad. After all, fruit juice is just flavored water and if
diluted 50/50 with water probably makes a better drink anyway.

Hi there, Joni and everyone,
Haven't been on the boards for a couple of days; been too busy over the
weekend. Will try to catch up tonight and say hi.
Joni, you seem to be doing all the right things. I'm sure it will pay off.
Last week was a bad one for me, as far as eating. I kind of let Life's little
upsets get me down. And when I am a little down I think food will help. NOT!
Well, I am trying again. You only fail if you quit trying, right? I decided
to start counting fat grams and I am on my second day. I know that one of you
is also doing this, is it you, Sue? or Val? Anyway, so far it isn't bad. I
seem to be getting plenty to eat and don't feel deprived. Will know how it
works come next Sunday.
Lloyd, hauling all those boxes! Be careful not to overdo too quickly. Take
care of those knees. Maybe you should wait a day to get back on the stepper.

You're right about juice. I only take juice on workout days (otherwise I take

exercising (as you know :) ).
